| Built in 1873 from hand-hewn chestnut and hemlock timbers, the Wayside Inn has provided weary travelers a place to rest with fine food and drink for over a century. Located between Fryburg and Lucinda on a path once traveled by the Algonquin Indians, the Wayside Inn has served this area as a Stage Coach Stop, Post Office, Hotel, Speak-Easy and Restaurant. | |||||||||||||

| From 1930 until 1996 the Wayside Inn was operated by a lovable woman named Helen Aul. Known far and wide as a great cook and baker, Helen’s hospitality was second to none, as many diners will attest to “Eating in the kitchen” when the dining rooms were overcrowded. Her first husband, a short German man with a familiar-looking moustache, was named Henry “Hitler” Schill, who loaned his nickname to the Inn. With a dance hall in the basement and a nickel pinball machine in the bar, an evening at "Hitler’s" never lacked excitement.
Helen’s smoked lima beans and lime green pickles are no longer available, but her commitment to serving fine food and service lives on. Owned today by Chris & Della Kurtzhals, the newest Wayside Innkeepers are dedicated to making your dining experience pleasant and memorable, so please don’t hesitate to make any reasonable request. |
